Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that supports your body’s own innate ability to heal and restore balance. It is an energy healing modality based on the idea across many cultures that an unseen “life force energy” flows through each of us and is connected to our vitality. A Reiki session is done fully clothed with the provider’s hands lightly on or a few inches above the body based on client preference. It is common during a Reiki session to feel sensations of warmth or coolness, gentle tingling, vibration, deep relaxation and peacefulness, and even nothing at all. A typical Reiki session is between 30 and 60 minutes long and the number of sessions varies based on each client’s particular needs and preferences. Reiki practitioners sometimes incorporate additional modalities based on client preferences. Although Reiki is not used to diagnose or treat medical or mental health conditions and is not a substitute for professional medical care, Reiki is now popular in many hospitals, hospice, and healthcare facilities as a complementary therapy to reduce stress, anxiety, and pain.
